Marks can help, but they can be faked, or you may find that they are totally absent. A professional examining a piece will take in its body, what it is made of, the glaze, the style and quality of decoration and the overall look and feel of it, as well as whatever information can be gleaned from the marks, before passing judgement.
Shape is one among many factors. In some pieces it tells very little. Plates, for example, have their shape dictated by their function, and have changed little over the centuries. The same is not so true of hollow ware cups, jugs, teapots and so on – which offers far more scope for variation. The problem with dating pottery by its shape is that although new types and forms of pottery are continually being introduced, very few of them are completely discontinued. Copies and reproductions of older wares are the stock in trade of many firms.

Chinese ceramics Porcelain originated in China, and it took a long time to reach the modern material. Until recent times, almost all East Asian porcelain was of the hard-paste type. There is no precise date to separate the production of proto-porcelain from that of porcelain. Copenhagen climate change conference China: US is sabotaging Copenhagen climate treaty by ‘changing Kyoto rules’ The US and other rich countries are “sabotaging” the Kyoto protocol, the only international treaty in force that fights global warming, by rejecting their historical responsibilities, China and other developing nations have said in coordinated statements. The accusation came as nations were trying to lay the framework for a global climate deal in Copenhagen in December that would take over when the current provisions of the Kyoto Protocol run out in The world’s nations promised nearly two years ago to hammer out a new global agreement by the end of to slash the heat-trapping greenhouse gases that drive global warming.
Emerging giants such as China and other developing countries say the new agreement should strengthen Kyoto, under which 37 highly industrialised nations took on hard commitments for cutting carbon dioxide pollution between and The United States signed the treaty in but never ratified it, and thus was exempt from its provisions.
In Bangkok, several nations – notably the US, Australia and Japan – have floated proposals calling for an approach in which each country would make its own national commitments. These would be measurable and verifiable, but outside any kind of internationally enforceable compliance regime.
